Dubai Universities: How to Choose and Apply

International education provides students with a broad worldview, introducing them to different cultures, traditions, and approaches to study and work, which is crucial in the era of globalization. Study Options in the UAE

The UAE has public universities where locals study on a scholarship basis. Foreigners can only study at international universities on a paid basis. 

For applicants with good language preparation, UAE universities offer a classic three-tier education system:

• Bachelor's degree. Study period from three to four years depending on the specialty.

• Master's degree. Study period from one to two years.

• Doctorate. Study period from three to five years.

All foreign applicants must prove their proficiency in English. To do this, they must pass an international exam: IELTS or TOEFL. If language skills need improvement and comprehensive preparation for university admission is required, there are preparatory programs:

• Foundation — a course that fills gaps in academic disciplines and helps prepare for admission.

• Pathway — a preparatory program for a Master's degree.

• Language courses — aimed solely at language learning. 

How University Education is Structured

The academic year in the UAE lasts from September to May, with breaks for winter and spring holidays. Undergraduate studies last 3–4 years. Students study academic disciplines and specialized subjects. Industrial practice and internships in local companies are mandatory.  

One can enter a Master's program with a Bachelor's degree. Programs are certified both in the UAE and in the home countries of the universities. Universities primarily use the British and American systems, where students can independently choose programs depending on their learning goals: a quick start in a profession or a scientific career. Programs are divided into academic and professional.

How to Apply to a University in Dubai

In Dubai, documents can be submitted in two stages. The standard autumn intake lasts from April to July, and the additional intake from September to November. Documents should be submitted in advance, 6–9 months before the start of studies. 

Requirements for Bachelor's admission:

• High school diploma with a high GPA.

• English language certificate (IELTS 6.0+/TOEFL 80+).

The university admission process begins with filling out an online application on the university website. All documents must be attached, the registration fee (from $50 to $100) must be paid, and the decision of the admissions committee awaited.

How to Choose a University

The university must be licensed. Accreditation of universities is handled by the UAE Ministry of Education. Additionally, universities receive accreditation from their founding countries. For example, one university may have two accreditations at once.

On the website of the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) of Dubai, you can find a university and check its rating, number of students, and graduates.

Students can live in rented accommodation or a dormitory. The fee for a room on campus is from $15,000 per year. However, it all depends on the university. Rented apartments will cost about the same — on average from $15,000 per year for a one-bedroom apartment. 

Living and food expenses can range from $700 monthly. Thus, a student may need from $1,500 to $2,500 for living.
